I hope you are having a relaxing and enjoyable February Break. February has been a busy month, so I wanted to take a few minutes to share some updates with you. Cultural Mosaic Dinner Our first annual Cultural Mosaic Dinner was a great success! Thank you for sharing your different cultures with us. The food was absolutely delicious and the students worked so hard on their posters. I hope you had as much fun as I did! STEAM We are currently engaged in a cross-curricular non-fiction unit with a focus on ecosystems. Students have taken virtual field trips, learned how to take notes and have been reading about their specific ecosystems. Students will use their notes to create a non-fiction book that includes the text-features that we have been learning about. They will then engineer their ecosystems in the Maker Space. Black History Month Over the past few weeks, students have been studying famous activists, scientists, writers, politicians, and athletes. The students have been engaged in many valuable conversations about equality and kindness that will continue throughout the month as well as the rest of the school year. Homework Students receive a homework packet at the beginning of the week. This includes their spelling words, a reading log, and math practice. Please encourage your child to complete his or her homework on a nightly basis and to return it to school the following Monday. The family journal should also be returned to school each Monday with a signature. Lastly. the green homework folders should go back and forth from home and school each day. Students have been earning a Class Dojo point for returning their folders to school! Other Updates:

Happy New Year! We are starting the new year with many exciting new units and projects. Please encourage your child to share what he/she is learning at school! Reading Our new reading unit is focuses on the author Tomie dePaola and the characters in his stories. The students are making connections between the stories as well as finding the problems, solutions, and central messages as they read. Over the next few weeks, I will be working with the students on their mid-year reading assessments. Math We have recently started Module 4 in math. Students are learning new strategies to add and subtract within 200. Parent information sheets will be sent home this week that further explain the new strategies we are using! Writing Our poetry unit is coming to an end. Students have worked hard to create rhyming poems, haikus, acrostic poems, and alliterations. They have really enjoyed sharing their work with the class and are gaining fabulous presenting skills! Keep an eye out for their published poetry books! Science Our new unit of study is matter. Students have been learning about the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. They are now using this information to make Friendship Bread. In the upcoming weeks, we will be having a pancake breakfast. Stay tuned for the date! Family Journals One Fridays we will continue to write in our Family Journals. As a reminder, students are encouraged to share their journals with their families on the weekend, and then bring them back to school on Mondays. I ask that parents either sign the letters or write a letter back to their child. I have loved reading all of the entries so far! Thank you again for your support! Homework Students receive a homework packet at the beginning of the week. This includes their spelling words, a reading log, and math practice. Please encourage your child to complete his or her homework on a nightly basis and to return it to school the following Monday. The Fall is flying by! The students have already shown so much progress and our classroom has developed into a community of respectful citizens. Curriculum Updates: Reading Our new reading unit is titled, “Characters and the Challenges they Face.” Over the next few weeks, students will be identifying the characters in the story, the setting, the problem, the resolution, and the feelings the characters are experiencing. Please encourage your child to identify these story elements at home! Math We are midway through our place value unit. Students have been writing numbers in standard form, expanded form, unit form and in their word names. We have also been counting money. Today, the students found the answer to the question, “How many ten dollar bills do you need to make $1000?” Over the next few weeks, we will be comparing and ordering numbers. Writing Poetry is our new writing unit. Students have been observing objects with poet’s eyes. This week, we will be creating poems that describe what we are thankful for. Science The bridge unit is well under way. I have been impressed by the number of bridges that are able to hold the 3 Billy Goats. As students finish their bridges, they will look at how they can improve their bridge. Social Studies In our Cultural Mosaic unit, we will be studying and celebrating different cultures and traditions. As the holidays approach, please let me know if you would like to come in to share a cultural celebration with the class. Students may work on Lexia at home in place of their reading homework. The green homework folders also need to go back and forth from home and school each day. The students know that this is their own responsibility, as they are gaining independence as second graders! Thank you for coming in to support our writers, actors, and readers. The students love sharing their work with you! Photos and videos from the Small Moment Celebration and Reader’s Theater performances will be posted this week. Miss Boudrow :) 10/23/2017 0 Comments October NewsDear Families,
I can’t believe how fast time is flying by! We started our week off on a great note. The students were focused and worked hard to brainstorm designs for their bridges in the “Imagine” phase of the engineering design process. Students will be creating bridges in the Maker Space over the next few weeks. Our design challenge was inspired by the story Three Billy Goats Gruff. Please ask your child to retell the story at home. Challenge them to do so using their five transition words! Local actor David Letendre came to visit the second graders today. David’s presentation focused on reading with expression. Students will be practicing their lines and performing the Reader’s Theater version of the Three Billy Goats Gruff over the next few weeks. The students are finishing up their small moment stories. We will be having a writing celebration next Thursday, November 2nd, at 10:00am. I’m so excited for the students to share their stories. They have been working so hard! This week , we will be starting Module Three in Math. This module has a strong emphasis on place value. Please check your child's folder for strategies to use at home! We are off to a great start! September flew by and our classroom routines are now in place! The students have been working hard and have done a wonderful job displaying the King Core Values. Weekly Updates: Reading In reading last week, we focused on reading fluency. Students have been practicing reading with expression, noticing punctuation marks, reading with accuracy, and reading at a rate that allows them to comprehend the story. Reading fluency will be practiced throughout the school year. Math The math lessons last week focused on measurement. Students created their own rulers and measured objects in the classroom in centimeters and meters. They used their pinkies as a benchmark to understand the size of a centimeter. Please encourage them to practice measuring objects at home using a centimeter ruler! Writing Last week, we focused on putting our small moment stories in the correct sequence using transition words (first, next, then, after that, finally). This upcoming week, we will work on adding details and adjectives to our stories. Science Students have begun using the engineering design process. The first challenge involved using index cards to create a tower that held an animal. The students did an excellent job working with their groups to solve the problem! We also learned that technology is an object designed by engineers to solve a problem. Computers and ipads are examples of technology, just like pencils and backpacks! Social Studies In Social Students, students are learning about what it means to be a good citizen in their communities. We have also discussed the characteristics of rural, suburban, and urban communities. Family Journals On Fridays we will continue to write in our Family Journals. As a reminder, students are encouraged to share their journals with their families on the weekend, and then bring them back to school on Mondays. I ask that parents either sign the letters or write a letter back to their child. I have loved reading all of the entries so far! Thank you again for your support! 9/19/2017 0 Comments Classroom UpdatesDear Families,
I just want to check in about a few things that I sent home with the students today. Class Dojo I have decided to use Class Dojo as a form of classroom management. Students will earn points throughout the day for staying on task, helping others, participating, persisting through a challenging task, and working hard. In order to reinforce positive behaviors, I will only be rewarding points on the positives, rather than taking away for negative behavior. Students will be able to “cash in” their points to earn a reward at the end of each week. Another excellent feature of Class Dojo is that Parents can see how their child is doing each day. I sent home a sheet of paper with an access code for each student. Please download the app or go to www.classdojo.com to set up an account! Tiny Topic Notebooks A “Tiny Topic Notebook” and a letter explaining the "Tiny Topic Notebook" were also sent home today. The notebook is meant to be a place for students to write down ideas for their small moment story, not to write a whole story. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. Room Parents I have received many emails with parents volunteering to be room parents or volunteering to help out in some way. I greatly appreciate the response! If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know by tomorrow. I will be picking names from a hat after school. If you do not get chosen and would still like to help out in some way, please reach out. The more the merrier! Have a wonderful long weekend! Miss Boudrow :) 9/15/2017 0 Comments Friday News!Dear Families,
We had another exciting week in Room 205! The students have been working hard and have done a wonderful job displaying the King Core Values. Weekly Updates: Reading In reading this week, we continued to practice the routines of reading workshop and how to build our reading stamina. We also used sticky notes as a tool to write down our thoughts while reading. Over the next few weeks I will be working with individual students to assess their reading levels. Math The math lessons this week had a strong focus on adding and subtracting using number bonds. Fact fluency has allowed students to be successful in this module. Although we practice basic addition and subtraction facts in school each day, I ask that you continue to practice math facts at home! Writing This week, we began brainstorming ideas for our “small moment” stories. Students will be writing about an important moment in their lives while using a lot of detail. Next week, I will be sending home Tiny Topics journals for students to brainstorm more ideas at home. Science What is a scientist? What do scientists study? These are questions that we began exploring in science this week. I am excited to begin learning about experiments next week! Social Studies The first Social Studies unit focuses on communities. Students learned that a community is a place where people live, work, and play. Students worked in groups to sort pictures into each category! We have also discussed ways to make our classroom a loving community. Family Journals Today, we wrote our second entry in our Family Journals. As a reminder, students are encouraged to share their journals with their families on the weekend, and then bring them back to school on Mondays. I ask that parents either sign the letters or write a letter back to their child. I loved reading the entries from last week! Thank you for your support! Friendly Reminders
