The Fall is flying by! The students have already shown so much progress and our classroom has developed into a community of respectful citizens. Curriculum Updates: Reading Our new reading unit is titled, “Characters and the Challenges they Face.” Over the next few weeks, students will be identifying the characters in the story, the setting, the problem, the resolution, and the feelings the characters are experiencing. Please encourage your child to identify these story elements at home! Math We are midway through our place value unit. Students have been writing numbers in standard form, expanded form, unit form and in their word names. We have also been counting money. Today, the students found the answer to the question, “How many ten dollar bills do you need to make $1000?” Over the next few weeks, we will be comparing and ordering numbers. Writing Poetry is our new writing unit. Students have been observing objects with poet’s eyes. This week, we will be creating poems that describe what we are thankful for. Science The bridge unit is well under way. I have been impressed by the number of bridges that are able to hold the 3 Billy Goats. As students finish their bridges, they will look at how they can improve their bridge. Social Studies In our Cultural Mosaic unit, we will be studying and celebrating different cultures and traditions. As the holidays approach, please let me know if you would like to come in to share a cultural celebration with the class. Family Journals One Fridays we will continue to write in our Family Journals. As a reminder, students are encouraged to share their journals with their families on the weekend, and then bring them back to school on Mondays. I ask that parents either sign the letters or write a letter back to their child. I have loved reading all of the entries so far! Thank you again for your support! Homework Students receive a homework packet at the beginning of the week. This includes their spelling words, a reading log, and math practice. Please encourage your child to complete his or her homework on a nightly basis and to return it to school the following Monday. Students may work on Lexia at home in place of their reading homework. The green homework folders also need to go back and forth from home and school each day. The students know that this is their own responsibility, as they are gaining independence as second graders! Other Updates:
Thank you for coming in to support our writers, actors, and readers. The students love sharing their work with you! Photos and videos from the Small Moment Celebration and Reader’s Theater performances will be posted this week. Miss Boudrow :)
